Believe it not hippos are known to be related to whales not pigs as was once thought. These huge creatures (weighing about 1 and a half tons) are vegetarian survive mainly on grass, leaving the water to feed for about 6 hours a night. Their skin gets very dry and warm since they don’t sweat they have to keep it moist and cool, this is one of the reasons they spend so much time in the water. In the river they can move more freely using up less energy. With their webbed feet they can easily swim through the water. Diving under is achieved by emptying the lungs air which allows them to remain submerged for 5mins at a time. When under water they close their ears and nostrils.
Hippos live in herds of up to 40, lazing around sleeping in the rivers .The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world and is often regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. Even the crocks keep their distance. Although physically huge they can still run at 30km about per hour over short distances. So if you come across one in the wild you better hope you have your runners on!
